DIRT WURX USA re-designs & builds Hungary's Komlo Dirt Park to FIM GP specs

Picturesque Hungarian motocross track gets a DIRT WURX USA facelift, re-tooled/directed and 20 seconds added to the lap time for FIM standards

photoMONROE, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2011) – This past week the crew at DIRT WURX USA made the trip over to Hungary’s Komlo Dirt Park – a track DIRT WURX USA first designed and built back in 2009. The goal this time was to re-design the track in accordance with FIM MXGP lap times, bringing a pro-level spin around Komlo Dirt Park’s GP track up from 1:48 to 2:10.

“Success,” said Rich Winkler, President of DIRT WURX USA. “We achieved our goals not particularly by adding length to the Komlo track, but more with the re-design of various turns, adding off-camber sections to slow riders down and building a Millville-like roller section.”

With the speeds on the previous Komlo GP track in excess of what the FIM mandates, DIRT WURX USA’s goal as well was to slow things down a bit on the long, wide open rolling glacial moraine located in the southern portion of Hungary’s Baranya County.

“The goal, eventually, will be to attract and FIM-sanctioned event to Komlo,” added Winkler.

In addition to the re-design and re-construct of Komlo’s GP track, DIRT WURX USA – over the course of seven days – also tuned up Komlo Dirt Park’s smaller MX track and SX track. The DIRT WURX USA team then combined with the top local enduro riders – something Hungarians take great pride in – and cut a quad-wide enduro track through the virgin woods surrounding the Komlo Dirt Park MX/SX/GP track property.

“We basically blasted through the woods with guys with chain saws and weed eaters following us,” said Winkler. “Just pioneered it!”

The end result was a new, depending on which way you turn, was a three to five-mile enduro loop at Komlo that Winkler said has “extremely difficult parts compared to a GNCC.” “We rode it after we were done and some of the sections were more or less glorified trials sections,” he said. “The Europeans take their enduro pretty serious over here – you can see that in some of the events like Red Bull puts on (Romaniacs, Erzberg Rodeo & Last Man Standing).”

In addition to banging out the GP/MX and SX tracks and cutting a wicked enduro course, the DIRT WURX USA crew found some time to break bread and bench race a bit with the locals – something Winkler & crew always look forward to on their trips to Hungary.
